Sound

Hello, I'm John Russell. I have a question for you. What is the name of an object we

use to study distant objects in outer space? The answer I had in mind is this noun, telescope.

When we say the word telescope, we need to be careful about a few pronunciation issues.

One of these issues is stress. Stress means that we say part of the word a little louder

or a little more forcefully. In some English words, we stress only one part of the word.

But in other words, such as telescope, we have what we call primary and secondary stress.

Do not worry too much about these terms now. We can clarify the point with an example.

In telescope, we have the stress on the beginning of the word. We also have some stress toward

the end of the word. The middle part of the word does not have stress. I will clap on

the parts of the word that we say a little more forcefully. Listen and repeat. Telescope.

Now let's do a thought experiment. What would telescope sound like if we did not stress it the

way a native speaker would? In other words, what kinds of stress patterns do we want to avoid?

We do not want to say this. Telescope. Telescope. Or this. Telescope. Telescope.

We want to say telescope. That's all for today. Keep up the good work.
